It is recommended that all who can get a flu shot, should. The flu shot not only acts as a preventative for you but can help stop the spread of the virus. The more people are immunised, the better it is for the community. Especially for the young, elderly and sick who are at a higher risk of flu complications.

Will the flu shot make me sick?
There is a common misconception that the flu shot will make you get the flu, it will not. However, occasionally some may experience some short-term side effects that may last for a day.
They include:
Headache
Fever
Fatigue
Nausea
Muscle aches
You may also experience pain at the site of injection that may last a few days.

Does the flu shot actually work?
While the flu shot is the best preventative measure you can take against the flu, it does not 100% guarantee your protection from the virus. However, it is still recommended as it does significantly reduce your risk of getting the flu.
If you have had the vaccination and happen to contract the flu, you are likely to be less sick than if you hadn't. The flu shot also decreases your risk of developing flu complications.
Flu complication can result in hospitalisation and, in serious circumstances, death.
When should I get the flu shot?

Do I need to get a flu shot every year? How long will the flu shot last?
Yes, you should get a flu shot every year. The flu shot is only active for three to four months from the date of immunisation, and take up to three weeks to take effect. As it's only active for three to four months, it is best to get the flu shot from mid-April so it will last through the flu season.
